He is a victim of one of the ethnic conflicts in Indonesia. Minke is a young man who has grown up in Batavia (now known as Jakarta) which is known for its distinct cultures. Batavia was home to many ethnic groups that were racially and religiously distinct from their neighbors, such as the Malays, Chinese, and Dutch. Minke was born to a Sundanese mother and a Balinese father. Minke was not only separated from his mother but also despised by his grandfather because he did not adhere to Islam and did not attend school. This novel, together with other novels written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, which will be discussed later in this review, was ranked as one of the best Indonesian novels. Although it is not as famous as his other novels; "Acheh State" and "The End of Kings", Rumah Kaca is still regarded as a modern classic for its sensitive portrayal of local politics. The story takes place in Jakarta which has become the new capital city. The novel tells the story of Minke who has been raised by his grandfather since he was a child. They are both very good friends until Minke's grandfather dies during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. He decides to move to the Dutch East Indies to go school. He can not finish his studies due to lack of money. His father comes back from Bali and asks him to come back home so he can have a better future. Minke's father dies before Minke can come back home so he goes back to Jakarta because he has no one else left except his mother. After her death, Minke leaves Jakarta and moves out to the countryside and becomes a teacher in a small village school.
